Các cấu trúc “either…or” và “neither…nor” được dùng để đưa ra lựa chọn hoặc phủ định giữa hai hoặc nhiều yếu tố.
“Either…or”
- Cấu trúc cơ bản:
- Either + A + or + B
Ví dụ: You can either go to the cinema or stay at home.
- Either + A + or + B
- Câu phức tạp với mệnh đề phụ:
- Either + A + or + B + (main clause) Ví dụ: Either you can start working on the project now or you can wait until next week, but you must finish it on time.
- Câu với nhiều lựa chọn:
- Either + (A + or + B) + or + C Ví dụ: Either the manager will approve the proposal or the team will need to revise it, or we will have to cancel the meeting.
“Neither…nor”
- Cấu trúc cơ bản:
- Neither + A + nor + B
Ví dụ: Neither the red dress nor the blue one fits me well.
- Neither + A + nor + B
- Câu phức tạp với mệnh đề phụ:
- Neither + A + nor + B + (main clause) Ví dụ: Neither the software nor the hardware is functioning correctly, so we need to get them fixed immediately.
- Câu với nhiều phủ định:
- Neither + (A + nor + B) + nor + C Ví dụ: Neither the coach nor the players nor the fans were satisfied with the team’s performance.
Một số lưu ý:
- Đối với chủ ngữ số nhiều: Khi sử dụng “either…or” hoặc “neither…nor”, chủ ngữ sau “either…or” và “neither…nor” thường phải theo quy tắc số nhiều nếu các thành phần trước đó là số nhiều.
- Ví dụ: Either the students or the teacher has to be present. / Neither the students nor the teacher are ready.
- Đối với mệnh đề đồng chủ ngữ: Nếu các mệnh đề có cùng một chủ ngữ, bạn có thể dùng “either…or” hoặc “neither…nor” mà không cần phải lặp lại chủ ngữ.
