Câu hỏi phủ định và câu hỏi đuôi phức tạp trong tiếng Anh là những cấu trúc ngữ pháp tinh tế được sử dụng để nhấn mạnh, xác nhận hoặc thăm dò thông tin một cách khéo léo.

1. Câu hỏi phủ định (Negative Questions)

• Cách sử dụng: Câu hỏi phủ định được dùng để diễn tả sự ngạc nhiên, sự mong đợi, hoặc để kiểm tra thông tin mà người nói cho là đúng.
• Cấu trúc: Auxillary verb + not + Subject + Verb?
• Ví dụ:
  • “Didn’t you see the sign?” (Bạn không nhìn thấy biển báo à?)
    • Câu này có thể diễn tả sự ngạc nhiên khi người nói nghĩ rằng người nghe nên nhìn thấy biển báo.
  • “Aren’t they coming to the party?” (Họ không đến buổi tiệc à?)
    • Người nói có thể mong đợi rằng họ sẽ đến và cảm thấy ngạc nhiên khi nghĩ rằng họ có thể không đến.
• Sử dụng trong văn cảnh khác:
  • Nhấn mạnh hoặc mong đợi sự đồng ý:
    • “Isn’t this a beautiful place?” (Chẳng phải đây là nơi tuyệt đẹp sao?)
  • Bày tỏ sự thất vọng hoặc khó chịu:
    • “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” (Sao bạn không nói với tôi sớm hơn?)

2. Câu hỏi đuôi phức tạp (Complex Tag Questions)

• Cách sử dụng: Câu hỏi đuôi phức tạp thường được sử dụng để kiểm tra hoặc xác nhận thông tin, đặc biệt khi câu chính chứa các yếu tố phức tạp như trạng từ phủ định, đại từ bất định, hoặc các thì phức tạp.
• Cấu trúc cơ bản: Statement + , + Auxiliary verb (phù hợp) + Subject?
• Ví dụ:
  • “Everyone enjoyed the movie, didn’t they?” (Mọi người đều thích bộ phim, phải không?)
    • “Everyone” là đại từ bất định, nên đuôi “they” được sử dụng.
  • “You’ve never been to Paris, have you?” (Bạn chưa bao giờ đến Paris, phải không?)
    • Mặc dù câu chính mang nghĩa phủ định (never), câu hỏi đuôi sử dụng trợ động từ khẳng định “have you?”
  • “Nothing can go wrong, can it?” (Không có gì có thể sai sót, phải không?)
    • “Nothing” là từ phủ định, nên đuôi là “can it?”

3. Các trường hợp phức tạp khác trong câu hỏi đuôi:

• Câu phủ định có trạng từ:
  • “You rarely make mistakes, do you?” (Bạn hiếm khi mắc lỗi, đúng không?)
• Câu với các động từ modal (khả năng):
  • “She should be here by now, shouldn’t she?” (Cô ấy lẽ ra phải ở đây rồi chứ?)
• Câu với “let’s”:
  • “Let’s go for a walk, shall we?” (Chúng ta đi dạo nhé?)
• Câu với “I am”:
  • “I am late, aren’t I?” (Tôi đến trễ, đúng không?)
    • Đây là một ngoại lệ, vì bình thường câu đuôi với “I am” sẽ là “am I not”, nhưng thực tế “aren’t I” được dùng phổ biến hơn.

Lưu ý:

• Ngữ điệu (Intonation): Trong câu hỏi đuôi, ngữ điệu lên cao ở cuối câu biểu thị người nói đang hỏi thông tin chưa chắc chắn, còn ngữ điệu đi xuống biểu thị người nói chỉ cần sự xác nhận.
• Cấu trúc phủ định với “not”: Đôi khi “not” trong câu phủ định được viết tắt, như “isn’t”, “didn’t”, “haven’t”. Điều này không thay đổi ý nghĩa câu, nhưng cần chú ý khi sử dụng trong văn viết và văn nói.
