Sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn khi nói về mùi cố định của một nơi

Mỗi buổi sáng thức dậy ở quê nhà, tôi lại cảm nhận ngay mùi lúa mới thoang thoảng từ cánh đồng ngoài kia. Đó là mùi cố định, không bao giờ thay đổi dù nắng hay mưa, như một phần bản sắc của làng quê Việt Nam. Người ta dùng thì hiện tại đơn để nói về những mùi đặc trưng ấy vì chúng tồn tại bền vững theo thời gian.

Khi bước chân vào một thư viện cũ, mùi giấy cũ, mùi mực in và mùi gỗ mục quyện vào nhau tạo nên không gian yên tĩnh đặc biệt. Mùi ấy không xuất hiện tạm thời mà luôn hiện diện mỗi khi bạn đẩy cánh cửa gỗ nặng trịch. Chính vì vậy, chúng ta nói “Thư viện smells musty” hoặc trong tiếng Việt “Thư viện có mùi ẩm mốc” bằng thì hiện tại đơn để diễn tả tính chất cố định.

Bánh mì Sài Gòn cũng vậy, mùi vỏ bánh giòn tan nóng hổi phảng phất khắp các con hẻm từ tờ mờ sáng. Dù bạn đến vào giờ nào, mùi ấy vẫn ở đó, quyến rũ, thân thuộc. Người ta không nói “đang thơm” mà nói “thơm” – thì hiện tại đơn – bởi đó là đặc trưng không đổi của văn hóa đường phố miền Nam.

Còn biển thì mãi mãi mang mùi mặn mà của sóng, của gió và của rong rêu bám trên đá. Mỗi lần đứng trước biển, dù ở đâu trên dải đất hình chữ S, ta vẫn nhận ra ngay cái mùi đặc trưng ấy. Nó không phải mùi thoáng qua mà là bản chất của đại dương, nên ta dùng hiện tại đơn: “Biển smells salty”.

Nhà thờ đá Phát Diệm lại có mùi nhang đèn trầm hương quyện cùng mùi đá lạnh hàng trăm năm tuổi. Bước vào không gian ấy, bạn như bước vào một thế giới tĩnh lặng, nơi thời gian dường như ngừng trôi. Mùi hương ấy không thay đổi theo mùa, theo năm tháng, nên ta nói “Nhà thờ smells of incense and ancient stone”.

Tóm lại, thì hiện tại đơn được dùng để miêu tả những mùi cố định, gắn bó lâu dài với một địa điểm hay một không gian cụ thể. Đó là những mùi đã trở thành một phần bản sắc, không còn là cảm giác nhất thời. Nhờ thì hiện tại đơn, chúng ta diễn đạt được sự thường xuyên, vĩnh cửu của giác quan thứ năm này một cách tự nhiên và chính xác nhất.

Thì hiện tại đơn được dùng để diễn tả mùi cố định, đặc trưng lâu dài của một địa điểm (lúa quê, biển mặn, thư viện cũ, bánh mì Sài Gòn…). Những mùi này không thay đổi theo thời gian nên được miêu tả như bản chất thường xuyên, vĩnh cửu.

Sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn khi nói về âm thanh đặc trưng

Mỗi sáng ở làng quê, tiếng gà gáy vang lên đều đặn từ khắp các ngõ xóm. Tiếng chó sủa, tiếng vịt kêu, tiếng gió lùa qua hàng tre đều là những âm thanh cố định của làng quê Việt Nam. Chúng không chỉ xuất hiện một lần mà lặp lại ngày này qua ngày khác, nên ta dùng thì hiện tại đơn để diễn tả: “Làng quê sounds peaceful every morning”.

Khi bước vào một khu chợ truyền thống, tiếng rao hàng lanh lảnh, tiếng mặc cả rôm rả, tiếng xe cộ ồn ào hòa quyện thành một bản nhạc đặc trưng. Dù bạn đến lúc mấy giờ, khu chợ vẫn luôn ồn ào như vậy. Vì thế, người ta nói “Chợ sounds lively” chứ không dùng thì tiếp diễn, bởi đó là âm thanh bản chất, không thay đổi.

Rừng sâu thì luôn vang lên tiếng chim hót, tiếng lá xào xạc và tiếng suối chảy róc rách. Những âm thanh ấy tồn tại quanh năm, không phải chỉ trong một khoảnh khắc. Ta nói “Rừng sounds alive” bằng thì hiện tại đơn để nhấn mạnh sự thường trực của thiên nhiên.

Biển cả lại có tiếng sóng vỗ rì rào ngày đêm không ngừng nghỉ. Dù bình minh hay hoàng hôn, tiếng sóng vẫn đều đặn như nhịp thở của đại dương. Người ta dùng “The sea sounds powerful” để diễn tả đặc trưng ấy một cách tự nhiên và chính xác nhất.

Trong thành phố lớn, tiếng còi xe, tiếng động cơ và tiếng người nói chuyện tạo nên một bản giao hưởng đô thị không bao giờ im lặng. Âm thanh ấy đã trở thành một phần bản sắc của phố phường. Vì vậy, ta nói “Thành phố sounds busy” để miêu tả tính chất thường xuyên, cố định của nó.

Nhà thờ cổ mỗi chủ nhật lại vang lên tiếng chuông ngân dài trầm bổng. Tiếng chuông ấy đã tồn tại hàng trăm năm, là linh hồn của không gian thiêng liêng. Ta dùng thì hiện tại đơn: “Nhà thờ sounds solemn” vì âm thanh ấy là đặc trưng bất biến theo thời gian.

Sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn khi nói về màu sắc cố định

Mỗi sớm mai nhìn ra cánh đồng, tôi thấy màu xanh non của lúa trải dài bất tận. Dù mùa nào, lúa vẫn xanh, đồng vẫn xanh – đó là màu sắc cố định của quê hương. Vì thế ta nói “Cánh đồng looks green” bằng thì hiện tại đơn, bởi màu ấy không thay đổi theo thời gian.

Sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn khi nói về giá cả hiện hành

Mỗi sáng ra chợ Đồng Xuân, cô bán rau vẫn hô “Một bó rau muống hai chục nghìn thôi!”. Giá ấy là giá hiện hành, có thể ngày mai tăng giảm nhưng hôm nay nó cố định trong suốt buổi chợ. Vì vậy ta nói “Rau muống costs 20,000 đồng a bunch” bằng thì hiện tại đơn.
